I’m getting older and I am no longer able to do some of the things I used to be able to do. There is one thing, I miss the most, that I used to be able to do that I can’t do anymore and that is eat whatever I want when I want to.
The fact of the matter is that I should have realized a long time ago that I wasn’t able to do it. If I had I probably would be in the situation I now find myself in. I’m diabetic.
Changes in my eating habits are the main result of learning about this predicament I find myself in. I’ve started to pay a lot of attention to some of the major food choices I make. But it’s amazing how many minor food choices we make that can have a profound effect on our health.
One of the changes I’ve made is to switch the oil I cook with. I’m using avocado oil when possible. Avocado oil will work in just about any recipe that calls for olive oil. The health advantages of avocado oil are what has led to my partnership with Chosen-Foods.
Roughly 15 of the finest, richest, Mexican Hass avocados go into each bottle of Chosen-Foods avocado oil.
As is often the case, with men my age in my condition, I find myself with cholesterol that is higher than both my doctor and I want. Switching to avocado oil will give me a chance to lower my cholesterol level.
Avocado oil is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid (OA) which can prevent the absorption of dietary cholesterol and triglyceride. OA can also reduce blood levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and triglyceride. Which can help prevent heart disease.
What does all that mean? It means that I can help to improve my health without sacrificing any of the goodness I like to have in my foods. For someone who loves barbecue and grilling has much as I do its great to have an ingredient that is better for me, tastes good AND works better on a grill.
Chosen Food avocado oil is cold pressed and naturally refined. All the impurities are removed using a chemical-free and low temperature process. What this means is that the pure avocado oil has a smoke point of 500 degrees which is a great thing when you’re grilling on high heat.
Smoke Points of Common Cooking Oils
- Chosen Foods Avocado Oil – 500° F
- Canola Oil – 435° F
- Virgin Avocado Oil – 400° F
- Virgin Olive Oil – 375° F
- Virgin Coconut Oil – 350° F
One of the things I’ve learned about oil during this time is that heating an oil past its smoke point weakens the nutrients, creates toxins and trans fats. Having a higher smoke point oil to use on your grill will help to decrease the toxins and trans fats that can produce an inflammatory response in your body.
